Traveling is a great opportunity to introduce some fresh content on your Bookstagram account. Whether you are on an international vacation, a roadtrip, or a day trip in your local city, there are plenty of ways to engage your followers and show your travels through books. Here are a few of my favorite ways to pair your reading with your travels:

Pack a book that takes place in your destination.

This is a simple tip, but it can really add to your reading experience and offer perfect photo opportunities! When I went to London last year I packed a couple Agatha Christie novels that I hadn’t read yet and I am so glad I did. Not only did I enjoy reading a book with an English setting, but I was able to take advantage of the surroundings to make some fun content. We went to an old castle library where the antique books complimented the Agatha Christie covers perfectly and I snapped another photo reading 4:50 From Paddington at the Paddington station!

Ask for book recommendations from your followers before you travel.

Make a simple post letting them know your destination and ask for recommendations to read on the trip. Social media connects us together from all over the world, so the chances are that you may have some followers who live in your destination, or they have traveled there themselves. This is a fantastic way to get some book recommendations that you maybe wouldn’t have found on your own. I will be going to Japan later this month and several of my followers suggested Before The Coffee Gets Cold. I will be packing the book and reading on the long plane ride there!

Shop at local bookstores on the trip.

I love finding small local bookstores on my trips and then bringing a book (or five) home with me! Not only is the book a reminder of where you got to explore, but it also supports a local business. These shops frequently feature local authors as well, so that is a wonderful way to learn more about the area and maybe find a new favorite author.

Feature local businesses on your trip.

When you shop in the bookstores, don’t be shy about tagging them or making a collaborative post with their social media accounts. This will get new eyes on your Bookstagram page and be a fun way to feature a small business that you enjoyed. The same goes for coffeeshops, restaurants, bars, anywhere you stopped by on your travels and enjoyed your book. I found the cutest bookstore when I was in Anchorage, Alaska a few months ago and they were happy to follow me and see their new store tagged on Instagram. I also shared an Alaskan coffee shop that had latte flights since it was a unique menu item and happened to go along with my current read perfectly.

Curate a list of books for a specific location.

Offer suggestions to your followers by creating a list of books for specific destinations. For example, make a carousel post for “books to read when you visit the Caribbean Islands” or “what to read when you go to the West Coast.” You can feature books suggestions and some of your own beautiful photos if you recently traveled there.

      Don’t forget about day trips!

Even if you don’t have plans to travel very far from home, you can still show off your books in local spots. Visit your favorite nearby bookshop and feature their beautiful shelves. Or snap some photos when you are relaxing at the lake, on a hike or eating at a local restaurant. Tagging these locations can also get more people in your area to see your bookstagram account and may lead to meeting new readers in person. I have met several other bookstagram ladies that are local to Washington State like me and it’s so fun to share recommendations and favorite spots.
